Lens Gear Assembly & Setup Guide
Kugglab focus gears are engineered for a precise, tool-less friction fit. Follow these steps to mount your gear ring safely and set up your follow focus system without putting unnecessary stress on your lens mechanics.
1. Push-Fit Mounting
- Hand Pressure Only: Hook one side of the ring over the focus grip first, then firmly walk it around the circumference with your thumbs. Thicker 80OD and 90OD profiles are rigid and require firm, determined pressure to stretch over the barrel.
- Zero Tools Rule: Use hand strength only. Never use pliers, screwdrivers, or clamps, and never force an obviously undersized ring onto an optic.
- Alignment: Ensure the gear ring is seated completely flat and perpendicular to the optical axis to prevent any wobble during rotation.
2. Check Clearances
Once mounted, rotate your focus ring manually through its entire throw (from close focus to infinity):
- Verify that the gear does not rub against adjacent aperture rings, lens hoods, or adapter rings.
- Confirm that manual rotation feels smooth, uniform, and free of binding.
3. Follow Focus Motor Calibration
When rigging wireless follow focus motors (such as Tilta Nucleus, DJI Focus Pro, or SmallRig):
- Set Low Motor Torque: Always set your motor power to Low or Medium-Low. High-torque motor profiles are meant for heavy cinema lenses and can damage delicate vintage helicoids.
- Calibrate Electronic Hard Stops: If your vintage lens does not feature positive mechanical hard stops or has delicate internal mechanics, calibrate your motor endpoints electronically rather than letting the motor drive against the lens limits.
- Mesh & Engagement: Align the motor gear with the Kugglab 0.8 MOD teeth. Ensure adequate tooth engagement without pressing the motor aggressively into the lens barrel, which creates unnecessary radial friction.
4. Removal & Maintenance
- To Remove: Gently work the ring backward using thumb pressure around the perimeter in small increments until it slides off. Do not use prying tools or screwdrivers.
- Cleaning: Crafted from durable, oil-resistant TPU 95A, the ring can be cleaned with a damp cloth and mild dish soap if it picks up dust or grime on set.
Need Assistance?
If a ring feels noticeably too tight or too loose, stop immediately and do not force it onto the lens barrel. Reach out directly to hello@kugglab.com with your order number and a photo of your caliper measurement so we can review the fit.
